The pioneer of the new indie singer-songwriters
Nowadays there are many singers-songwriters in the indie scene. That´s why we can´t deny to the Madrid born Lourdes Hernández, better known by her a.k.a. Russian Red, her leading role in opening doors to a folk-infused pop style similar to the one delivered by artists such as Feist, PJ Harvey, Kristin Hersh and Cat Power.
The Russian Red project appeard in the scene in 2007, when a demo that Lourdes had made with the musician Brian Hunt was seen more than 70.000 times in her MySpace page. This recording ended up in the hands of the Andalusian producer Fernando Vacas, who published her debut “I Love Your Glasses” (2008). Even if it appeared in an independent label, it became the indie phenomenon of the year. Everybody was surprised by her beautiful, captivating voice, with her folk-inspired sound and with her melancholic songs performed in English.
Lourdes wouldn´t release her following album until 2011. “Fuerteventura” was published by a multinational label, and that meant a big leap forward in her career. The album, recorded in Glasgow, was produced by Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai), and some of the members of Belle & Sebastian took part in it.
Russian Red has just published her third album, “Agent Cooper”. The singer moved to Los Angeles to record it, with the production of Joe Chiccarelli, known for his work with The White Stripes, The Strokes, My Morning Jacket and Beck, among others.
